Two brothers, long estranged, reunite at a ceremony to honour their lost sibling's life. As they seek to let go, they must confront the past whilst rediscovering the joy that binds them together.
A powerful fusion of movement, song and text, Now, I See is an exploration of identity, forgiveness and nature's capacity to heal. It celebrates the profound bond of brotherhood and the resilience that can be found in joy.
Now, I See is the second instalment in Lanre Malaolu's groundbreaking trilogy that excavates and celebrates the reality of being a Black man in contemporary Britain. It was premiered at Stratford East, London, in 2024, directed by Malaolu.
Also available: the first play in the trilogy, Samskara, premiered at The Yard Theatre, London, in 2021.
'Remarkable... emotional punch, gut-wrenching performances and formal invention... Alongside the darkness, there is a great amount of lightness, comedy and laughter... joyful, with an ending that feels ritualistic in its forgiveness, and healing'
Guardian'Powerful and bold... a sensitive, soul-searching study of Black masculinity in contemporary Britain... an astonishing closing scene that hits hard'
The Stage'A story of familial conflict and resolution... Malaolu has crafted a tale full of humour, confessional moments and heartbreaking choreography'
Reviews Hub'An emotionally deep and powerful show'
LondonTheatre1'Magical... shines a light on how the physical body holds grief and the ways in which this manifests in the lives of black British men... The script is sharp, punchy and full of moments for erupting laughter... absolutely mesmerising... builds to a beautiful moment of release and redemption'
Broadway World'A moving story that shows life is not about fighting, but about feeling, forgiving, and bonding'
Theatre Weekly'Stunning, gorgeous and heart-wrenching'
The Rendition'Exceptionally rare... captures so perfectly the way it feels to be alive... nothing I say is going to quite capture what it felt to experience this show... it is everything theatre can be'
The Black Project'Wonderful... Malaolu's early successes may have been through movement and dance but this piece shows his talents as a writer'
The Spy in the Stalls'A beautifully structured piece of writing... Its themes are universal and the raw emotion played out on stage builds and builds towards understanding and healing'
