The Gabriels
Election Year in the Life of One Family
Paperback £23.99
A trilogy of plays following the Gabriel family of Rhinebeck, New York, through the momentous and divisive 2016 presidential election year. While preparing meals in their kitchen, together they grapple in real time with issues of money, history, art, politics and family, as well as the fear of having been left behind.
Richard Nelson's The Gabriels: Election Year in the Life of One Family is an intimate series of three plays intended to be performed by the same cast: Hungry, What Did You Expect? and Women of a Certain Age.
Hungry opened Off-Broadway at the Public Theatre in March 2016. What Did You Expect? opened in September 2016. Women of a Certain Age opened on election night, 8 November 2016.
'Richard's determination to put real life onstage, to tell the truth by avoiding all grandstanding and theatrical flourishes, has created a masterful trilogy of plays that show us, not only the way we live now, but the way we live' Oskar Eustis, from his Introduction
'An extraordinary theatrical event in which the personal and the political combine in a way that suggests a contemporary Chekhov'
Guardian'The Gabriels, the tenderly wrought creations of the playwright Richard Nelson, along with Mr. Nelson's earlier tetralogy, The Apple Family Plays, may collectively represent the most profound achievement in topical theater in this country since the Depression-era triumphs of Clifford Odets's Waiting for Lefty and Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock'
