Assassins

By Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman

Paperback £19.99

A dark and funny look at the end of the American dream - Stephen Sondheim lifts musical theatre to new heights of brilliance.

Dallas, November 22, 1963. Lee Harvey Oswald, panicking and alone, lifts a gun to his own head and prepares to die. Everyone who has tried to kill the President of the United States appears to help him change his mind. They may well succeed - these are men and women who will do anything to get famous.

Assassins is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by John Weidman, based on an idea by Charles Gilbert, Jr. It first opened Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in December 1990.

Assassins opened in London at the Donmar Warehouse in October 1992, in a production directed by Sam Mendes.

A 2004 Broadway production of the musical won five Tony Awards.
